CO-PRESIDENT

Anna Tharakan

My name is Anna Tharakan and I am a junior attending Duke University majoring in Biology and Global Health, with a Chemistry Minor and the Health Policy Certificate. From learning about health inequalities in class to observing the effects of small lifestyle changes in the community, I have been able to build a passion in identifying barriers to healthcare access and alleviating health equity within local communities. By expanding access to clean water through water pumps and rehabilitation programs, I hope to help HHI expand opportunities for the community and increase access to clean health and healthcare that individuals can have.

CO-PRESIDENT

Akhilesh Shivaramakrishnan

My name is Akhilesh Shivaramakrishnan and I am a junior at Duke University. I’m majoring in global health and public policy, and hope to explore both scientific and policy driven solutions that will help to address the significant barriers to healthcare access that exist around the world. In India, my family’s home, inequities in education, health, and other basic rights are overwhelmingly present-with a huge gap between the ultra rich and the poor. I hope tat through the work I do in HHI, I can help to close that gap just a little bit by advocating for water rights and working to implement clean water solutions in the villages of northeast India.

VICE PRESIDENT, OUTREACH

Sejal Patel

My name is Sejal Patel and I’m a sophomore studying Biology with a Neurobiology concentration at Duke. Being able to provide clean water access to health disparate communities is one of the first steps in creating a more widespread equitable healthcare system. I’m proud to be part of a club that impacts individual lives directly, and hope to further use HHI’s resources to expand our impact both quantitatively and geographically

VICE PRESIDENT, EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Anika Parameswaran

Hi my name is Anika, and I am a junior double-majoring in English and Biology! I joined HHI because resource equity, and specifically water equity, is a cause that deeply resonates with me. As someone who is interested in a health-care oriented path, I believe that addressing sociological determinants of health is an integral part of this field. HHI’s mission of providing sustainable, clean water to many communities in India is one that inspires me, and I love contributing to this mission through the grant-writing process!

VICE PRESIDENT, MEMBERSHIP

Aiza Akhtar

My name is Aiza Akhtar and I am a sophomore at Duke, majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and Science and Public certificate. From personal experiences and through exposure to global-health related courses, I’ve increasingly become aware of the persistent health inequities that exist across both the developed and developing worlds between the privileged and the unprivileged. I hope to continuously fight for health and clean water equity, and through HHI’s work, a future in which healthcare access is affordable and accessible for all seems tangible.
